The RI Department of Health has announced that the flu is widespread in Rhode Island. Contact your physician if you believe your child has the flu for evaluation and possible medication. Do not send children to school with flu-like symptoms (sudden onset, high fever,extreme headache, muscle aches, and severe fatigue.)
Please review the following guidelines to determine if your child is well enough to be in school.
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
- Fever defined as 100+ degrees as per the CDC( Centers for Disease Control). Your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees for a minimum of 24 hours without fever reducing medication.
- Vomiting and/or Diarrhea (even once in the last 24 hours)
- Muscle aches or weakness
- Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
- Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
When your child has mild cold symptoms (stuffy nose, mild cough, sneezing, no fever) they should be in school.
Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities upon return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will help minimize the spread of illnesses in the classroom.
If your child becomes ill during the school day the school nurse will notify you that he or she needs to go home. Please review and update your contact phone numbers and options to be able to get your child from school within the hour of being notified. It is not acceptable for a student to remain in the clinic for multiple hours when they are sick.
Please notify the school nurse if your child is diagnosed with a trackable illness such as influenza and strep throat in addition to chicken pox and other diseases for which children receive immunizations. This will allow us to notify Pell families of illness outbreaks as necessary.
Following these guidelines will help to decrease student absences and loss of academic time. We appreciate your help as parents and guardians to make this happen.
