Electric Boat

Newport Area Career and Technical Center and Electric Boat are joining together in a partnership to fill employment vacancies in Electric Boat.

November 21, 2018. Newport, RI. The Newport Area Career and Technical Center (NACTC) is proud to announce our partnership with Electric Boat in North Kingstown, with the help of the van Beuren Charitable Foundation and the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training. Newport Area Career and Technical Center students will have the opportunity to pursue a career at Electric Boat in Maritime Electrical or Maritime Pipefitting. Both of the programs have vacancies which can lead to immediate hiring upon graduation from Rogers High School/NACTC.

Employers in Rhode Island are looking to continue to build a future talent pipeline in manufacturing.   The Newport Area Career and Technical Center aims to reimage the high school experience to prepare students with the skills they need for these high-wage, high-growth jobs. NACTC hopes to build on the success of its current CTE programs to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed in the 21st-century workforce. NACTC aims to improve the Rhode Island economy through strengthening workforce development and meeting the talent needs of employers and keeping that talent here in Rhode Island.

Our families are eager for schools, curriculum, and career and technical education programs that will prepare their children for a futuristic workforce. Electric Boat is looking for 365 students per year to come out of high school and into one of their trades. NACTC creates education and employer partnerships for all of our students to create a clear pathway from high school to a career.

Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain applauded the partnerships that have enabled the programming to continue to grow and thrive. “We are very fortunate that all the hard work of our staff working with community members and the School Committee is being recognized. Just this past year in the Skills USA program one of our students - Eliza Taylor - was recognized out of the entire country as a silver medalist- number two in the entire country for her work in technical computer applications. Our students as juniors are receiving scholarship offers and we are engaging in more and more summer and year round internships.”

Robert Young, the Director of the Newport Area Career and Technical Center says, “There is no greater feeling in Career and Technical Education than providing an opportunity that has an impact in our student’s lives in a profound way. Through partnerships like this there is an opportunity to help students find new careers. As the Director of the NACTC, I strive to create new opportunities in terms of partnerships and new programs to benefit the students of Newport.”

The Newport Public School District is well-positioned to take full advantage of its selection as an Electric Boat Partnership school. A robust career pathway, developed in partnership with Electric Boat will transform the trajectory for Newport County students and provide them with the necessary skills to continue needs of the manufacturing industry. Funding for this program is being provided by grants awarded by vBCF, Department of Labor, Perkins Funding and the Governor’s efforts in career pathways.
