Coming this Spring - Pell Pavilion Project

Pell Pavilion Project

Lori Delemos and Mary Nordby, Pell STEM Specialists

The Pell Pavilion Project is a plan to build an outdoor classroom on the campus of Claiborne Pell  Elementary School.   The Pavilion will be a wonderful outdoor learning space for our STEM classes, K-4 classes, as well as a space that can be utilized for our after school and summer programs.  It will also serve as some needed shade at recess for UV protection.

On this project, we are collaborating with the Freedom by Design Team , which is a graduate program run through Roger Williams Architectural School, Rogers High School NACTC Program, The Newport Arboretum, and the City of Newport.  The Freedom by Design Team is designing the bench seating, the outdoor storage and whiteboard.  The Rogers NACTC students will be doing the building of the benches.  The Newport Arboretum will be helping with landscaping and the container gardens.  The City of Newport is providing the concrete pad and the installation of the shade structure.  This project is a wonderful example  of collaboration with our Newport students and community partners.

We’d like to add some finishing touches to this space to make it more inviting to our students.  Our hope is to install interactive features that encourage curiosity and exploration.  For example, we would like to have an outdoor magnet wall.  Students design and build vertical ramp systems for balls, water, or even sand.  They experience force, motion, and gravity through natural play.

We are currently still fundraising for this project.  If you would like to help us in any way or want to know more, please email us!

Thank you!
