Nominations sought for education awards

NEWPORT — The Newport Public Education Foundation is accepting nominations for the annual Noreen Stonor Drexel Friend of Education Awards. The awards are selected annually and recognize individuals and organizations that significantly contribute to the students of Newport Public Schools.

The awards are named in memory of Noreen Stonor Drexel, a 22-year special adviser to the Newport Public Education Foundation board of trustees. Nominations can be submitted in three different categories: Friend of Education, Partner in Education and Unsung Hero.

Past Friends in Education award winners include Nancy Folcarelli (2014); Donna Maytum (2013) and Jane Regan (2012). Past Partners in Education award winners include BankNewport (2014), Newport Family & Child Opportunity Zone (2013) and Grenon’s of Newport (2012). Past Unsung Heroes winners include Mary Sheehan (2014), Eddie Merritt (2013) and Kelly Turner (2012).

Drexel, who died in November 2012 at the age of 90, was an original trustee of the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust. Under her leadership, the McBean trust supported Newport Hospital, Salve Regina University, churches, Touro Synagogue, the city of Newport, social service organizations, libraries and many other charitable organizations in addition to local schools. Much of her lifetime of work was devoted to education and health care.

Awards will be presented at the annual Newport Public Education Foundation benefit event, “Evening for Education,” which is scheduled for Friday, June 19.
