Principal Traci Westman’s message of the day: The character trait for the month of May is Citizenship. Happiness is knowin' you've done a good job, whether it's professional or for another person. — Elvis Presley

Attendance Matters: Our overall goal for the year is to have 95% of students in school every day, throughout the year. If your child is ill, by all means keep them home until they are well, but otherwise, please help us reach our goal! Today’s attendance is 92.3% so 64 students were absent today.

Spring Concert: Come check out the Pell Champion Strings and Champion Chorus on Tuesday, June 4th at 6:00pm. Admission is FREE!

Moving Up Orientation:  Thursday, June 6th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Parents of students entering 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade next year are invited to attend our annual Moving Up Orientation Night. Come and learn about the grade level classrooms, curriculum, expectations and specials that your child will be participating in next school year and find out what you will need to help make your child successful.  This is also a great opportunity to meet other grade level parents and teachers. We will meet in the Pell Elementary School cafeteria and then move up to grade level classrooms.

Calendar Error: This Friday, May 24th there is a full and regular day of school. June 7th is also regular, full day of school except the Pre-K at the Pell Annex will be closed for professional development. Apparently on the online calendar, which feeds into the app calendar, it stated that this Friday, May 24th  and all schools will be closed June 7th, but that was an error. Only the Pre-K will be closed on 6/7. There will be school this Friday as well as June 7th. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school.

Pell PTO: Our Pell PTO is i need of new officers next year as our current officers are going on to Thompson. We have many spots to fill including president or co-presidents. If you are interested, please contact the PTO at pellpto@npsri.net

Field Day Volunteer needed: Each year we need the assistance of volunteers to make Field Day run smoothly with each station having one or two adults. Could you please forward this to your parents seeking their help. You will need a current cleared BCI check to volunteer. If you don’t have one, our family office can help facilitate one. Here is the link for the sign up genius volunteers.

Kindergarten Registration: There will be an open kindergarten registration event happening on June 5th at Pell School from 12-4. All children residing in Newport, who will be 5 years of age by September 1st, 2019, should register for kindergarten. In order to register you must bring an original birth certificate for the child, vaccination records and physical exam and proof of address (lease or gas/electric or water bill, or tax bill).

End of the Year Schedule: The state has denied our request to waive the four days missed during the National Grid crisis so the following will be the schedule for the end of the school year. School will be in session until June 21st, with Thursday, June 20 and Friday, June 21 being half days. Pell students will be dismissed at 11:45. The revised school calendar is posted on our website.

Community Happenings:

Wrestling Program at Florence Gray Center: The Middletown Wrestling Club (MWC) will host a tournament for local youth at the Florence Gray Center, 1 York, Street, Newport, this Saturday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m.  Approximately 25 Newport County boys and girls ranging in age from 7 to 12 have signed up and are weighed in to participate. The Club anticipates that additional young people from other parts of the state and their parents will also be on hand, and it encourages local families whose children have an interest in learning more about the sport of wrestling to attend. The club’s mission is to bring a positive, healthy, no-cost and gender-neutral activity to the community while instilling self-discipline and confidence in participating youth. Youth participating in the May 25 competition will receive t-shirts and trophies, and a team photo will be taken. There is no admission charged and all are Welcome.
