Physical Education & Health Policies

Activities: Students will choose their activity at the start of each unit and will stay in that activity for the entire duration. Activities have limited space and different grade levels will have priority when choosing the activity. Students not present in their assigned activity will receive a zero for participation that day.
Health: All students will be required to participate in health classes during the year. Health Education will take place in the classroom. Students will be responsible for completing all assignments. Topics will include: personal health, mental and emotional health, injury prevention and safety, nutrition, family life, environmental health, disease control and prevention, substance use and abuse, and consumer health.
Grading: Students will be graded daily using the Physical Education Rubric. Students will receive a grade upon completion of each unit. At the end of each term unit grades/ health grades will be averaged to obtain a term grade. At the end of the year, the four term grades will be averaged for a final grade. Fitness testing will be completed three times during the year and will be counted as benchmarks for the course.
Make-Up Classes: Make-up Physical Education classes will be offered every Wednesday after school. During this time students may make up any excused absences (approved by teacher) or medical excusals from the prior two weeks. Students must be prepared in PE attire and ready to go by 2:10 pm. Make-up classes will consist of one mile on the track during seasonable weather and twenty minutes of activity during inclement weather. Any absences that are not made up within two weeks of the absence will result in a zero for that day. Any health assignment missed due to an excused absence must also be made up with your health teacher.
Behavioral Expectations: All students are expected to behave in a manner as outlined in the RHS handbook. Physical Education and Health students in particular, must strive to maintain the highest standards of behavior in the following areas:
· Preparation: Students must wear the appropriate Physical Education attire including sneakers (no boots, dress shoes, moccasins, flip-flops…) shorts or athletic pants (no RHS uniforms), T-shirts (must have sleeves and follow school code for design/logos). All assignments should be complete and on time.
· Respect: In our program we are promoting positive, healthy lifestyles. Students must demonstrate respect to self, teachers, classmates and equipment and always show good sportsmanship!
· Additional Gymnasium Expectations: Students are responsible for personal belongings. All personal belongings must be locked in the locker rooms and are not allowed in the gym during Physical Education classes. This includes books, backpacks, purses, wallets, ipods, phones, etc. Food and drink are also not allowed in the gymnasium. (RI General Law 16-21.2-11Refer to student handbook page 8)
