          COURSE PROFILE

 

COURSE TITLE:  Pre-Calculus

 

DEPARTMENT:      MATH                                    TEACHER:  Mr. Hackman

 

OBJECTIVES:

1)       Students will demonstrate achievement of the academic expectations for mathematics as listed in the “Expectations for Student Learning” Document.

2)       Students will achieve standards as listed in the RI Math Frameworks and the “New Standards”.

3)       Students will successfully complete the Pre-calculus curriculum as set forth in the RHS Mathematics Curriculum document.

4)       Students will be prepared to enroll in, and successfully complete, college level Calculus.  (The course serves as a transition to AB Calculus here at RHS.) 

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:

1)       Students must meet all requirements listed on the RHS Math Department Profile (printed on reverse).

2)       Students are required to attend class regularly and promptly and to come prepared to learn.

3)       Precalculus is a demanding and challenging college preparatory course which requires concentrated daily study, both in and out of class.

4)       Students will work individually and in groups to solve complex, real-world math problems.

5)       Students must submit a thoughtful self-evaluation at the close of each grading period.

BOOKS, MATERIALS, SUPPLIES:

1)       Textbook:  Precalculus; Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic, Addison Wesley Longman, 2007.

2)       The Texas Instruments TI-84 (or TI-83) Graphics Calculator will be used extensively.  In the past students have found it helpful to purchase one of these calculators for use in class and at home.  At the very least, a scientific calculator must be purchased.

GRADING POLICY:

1)      Written Tests and PBA’s – 45%

2)      Quizzes, shorter PBA’s – 45%

3)      Homework  --  10%

4)      The extended project will be assigned during the 3rd quarter and will count as two test grades.

5)      The final exam will count 10% of the final grade.

6)      Grades may be revised in accordance with the RHS Math Grade Revision Policy.

    

HOMEWORK:  Homework will be assigned on a daily basis, and its completion is necessary for success.

MAKE-UP WORK:  It is the responsibility of the student to obtain and make-up all graded work missed

due to an excused absence.   Failure to make-up work will result in a grade of ZERO for the   assignment.

CLASSROOM RULES:

1)       Students will observe all rules and regulations as outlined in the Student Handbook.

2)       Class will be conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

TIMES AVAILABLE FOR CONFERENCES, TUTORING, EXTRA HELP:
