About Social Studies Class

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to Grade 7 Cluster 2 Social Studies!  This year we will be studying United States History.  We’ll start the year reviewing the Constitution and our government, and continue with the Civil War through to present day.  We will also discuss many important current events throughout the year.  We will be completing many interesting and challenging projects, including persuasive essays, informational reports and an extensive unit on the Holocaust, just to name a few.  While we have a lot to learn, I know it will be a rewarding and exciting journey!

For my class, students are required to have:
3-ring binder, only used for Social Studies.  It should be 1 to 1 ½ inches thick.  We will use this binder to store worksheets and handouts, as well as class notes.  Students are also required to have either a pencil or pen—blue or black ink only.

Along with a textbook, we will be using a variety of reading materials in my class.  No textbook will be assigned for students to take home.  However, if ever a student or parent wants to borrow a textbook, I am more than happy to lend it out.

I expect my students to come prepared for class every day.  This means having their homework agenda, 3-ring binder, a writing utensil, and their assignments.  I calculate grades using the following system:

·         40% is based on daily Classwork & Projects

·         30% is based on Tests and Reports

·         20% of the grade is based on Quizzes

·         10% of the grade is based on daily Homework

I believe communication between teacher, students and parents is essential to ensure success.  If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year please do not hesitate to contact me.  The best way to reach me is through email at tmello@npsri.net, or call Thompson at 847-1493.

Lastly, this year our school is especially concerned with keeping your children healthy all year.  Therefore, any donations from you to do so would be greatly appreciated.  Some suggestions include: hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, tissues, and paper towels.

Thank you for your support.  I look forward to our year ahead!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tara Mello
