Meet the Teacher

Welcome to Grade 5!  My name is Melissa Turner and I will be teaching Science this year.  This is my 28th year of teaching in Newport Public Schools.  I started my career teaching fifth grade at Cranston-Calvert Elementary School, then taught second grade at Coggeshall for many years.  I diverted a bit from the classroom and took a math intervention position for about 7 years.  About five years ago, I happily returned to the classroom at Thompson Middle School.  It has been a fun educational journey and I look forward to continuing it with your child.

I am a product of Newport Public Schools!  I graduated from Rogers in 1985 and went to the University of New Hampshire.  I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Studies and my Master's in Elementary Education.  I live here in Newport, in the good ole fifth ward, with my husband Kelly, daughter Meg, son Michael, and chocolate lab Moose.  Kelly is a custodian at Pell Elementary, where Michael will be in second grade.  Meg is a freshman at Providence College.  I love being able to see my students out in the community!
