2nd Grade Curriculum

READING
2nd grade readers focus on the Common Core State Standards for Reading and Language Arts. To help us to meet each of the standards in this area, we use McGraw Hill's Reading Wonders program. The program provides weekly instruction in reading, phonics, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and writing. Readers will use both fiction and nonfiction to:
Build strong reading foundation skills
Understand complex text
Find and use text evidence
Engage in collaborative conversations
Write to a variety of sources

MATH
2nd grade mathematicians focus on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. This year your 2nd grader will work on standards in these four main areas:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
Add and subtract within 20.
Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication.
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Understand place value.
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.
Measurement and Data
Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.
Relate addition and subtraction to length.
Work with time and money.
Represent and interpret data.
Geometry
Reason with shapes and their attributes.

SOCIAL STUDIES
