Today at Thompson Middle School, Newport Mayor Khamsyvoravong honored students from Mrs. Sheehan’s and Ms. Icart’s art classes whose artwork was on display at the Black Ships Festival in Shimoda, Japan. These students received not only international recognition but artistic gifts and tokens of appreciation from our sister city – Shimoda, Japan. Awards and gifts were presented by the Mayor to the following students:

The sister city relationship between Newport and Shimoda, Japan is one of the sister-city relationships Newport has with cities around the world. Commemorating the visit of Commodore Perry to Shimoda, the festival held in Shimoda every May is where these Newport student’s artwork was displayed.
During the upcoming visit to Newport in July, the Shimoda delegation will take part in a Welcome Reception, an Opening Ceremony in Touro Park and a graveside ceremony at Commodore Perry’s grave in Island Cemetery along with a visit to City Hall.
